L'année 2009 mérite un grand intérêt envers cette discipline que plusieurs téchniciens l'ont suivi avec une très gande attention durant les différentes manifestations officielles avec le retour de loin de l'Américain Dwight Phillips, de la nouvelle star de l'indoor l'Allemand Sébastia Bayer,du leader des dernières années; le Panameen Irving Saladino, du potentiel rival le Sud Africain Godfrey Mokoena, et de la nouvelle révélation internationale du jeune Australien Mitchell Watt.
Le championnat du monde d'athlètisme de Berlin 2009 était un évenement principal très attendu pour connaitre les nouveaux grands concurrents du saut en longueur de la saison . A 31 ans, Dwight Phillips avait effectivement accompli sa meilleure saison en détronant Irving Saladino, seul athlète redoutable dans les moments propices avec un brillant départ cette saison avec deux grands résultats 8.56m et 8.63 m en mois de juin.Quand à Mokoena,c'est comme d'habitude, son talent et sa stabilité téchnique lui ont offert encore la deuxième position du podium mondial cette année.La grande surprise à Berlin était l'impressionnant jeune athlète Australien, agé de 21 ans seulement a pu démontré avec force et intelligence ses capacités athlètiques d'un grand adversaire malgré le manque de son experience internationale, sa médaille de bronze l'a complètement méritée.
Bien souvant en athlètisme, la domination de certaines nations est constatée dans quelques épreuves.Ces dernières années, le saut en longueur est devenu une épreuve très ouverte à la concurrence, c'est ce qu'on a pu constater lors de la plupart des grands évenements athlètiques. Les trois premières places du podium de Berlin ont été remportées par trois différents continents : Amérique du Nord, Afrique, et Océanie.Si l'on élargit le même champ d'application au top lists du saut en longueur 2009, on constate que sur les vingt premiers athlètes, 15 d'entres eux sont en provenance de nations différentes.
