Le concept de la discipline athlétique remonte aux civilisations antiques.L'athlétisme se définit par un ensemble d'épreuves regroupées en familles de disciplines.
Déjà à son origine , le mot athlétisme qui vient du grec " athlos" signifiant duel ou combat , il s'agit donc de rivaliser entre adversaires afin de pousser les résultats et les performances vers des records encore plus loins.
L'athlétisme s'est développé progressivement jusqu'à la création des jeux olympiques modernes en 1896 à Athènes.
L'epreuve du saut en longueur existait dans tous les programmes de compétitions depuis l'antiquité ,on retrouve la trace de cette épreuve très appréciée par ses adéptes pour son éxécution naturelle dans les jeux celtiques avant J.C. Par la suite elle s'est développée dans les pays anglo-saxons au milieu du XIX ème.siècle.
Depuis le début de l'établissement des records du monde dans l'épreuve du saut en longueur,l'analyse chronologique annuelle ou pluri-annuelle du record du monde montre une progression très irrégulière dans l 'évolution de la performance et les espaces du temps où on assiste à une très grande période de stagnation due aux deux guerres mondiales.
A partir des jeux olympiques de México 1968, l'épreuve du saut en longueur a connue aussi une autre phase sans menace pour le record de Robert "Bob"Beamon , et il fallu attendre encore vingt trois ans pour voire son compatriote Mike Powell le battre avec saut fantastique à 8.95m au championnat du monde d'athlétisme de Tokyo en 1991.Depuis ce temps là ce record existe toujours et semble être loin pour y être touché bientôt.

From the Mexico Olympics in 1968, the long jump also experienced another phase without threat to the record of Robert "Bob" Beamon, and it must to wait another twenty three years to see his compatriot Mike Powell beat this record in a fantastic jump with 8.95m at the World Championships in Athletics Tokyo 1991.Since this time, this record still exists and seems to be far to be reached soon.
